“As AI is now clearly being used in a comprehensive and world-changing way, a major challenge will be to make the processes and outputs of complex AI systems comprehensible to humans….Notwithstanding the current developmental challenges, there are technically no limits to the possible applications of AI, which leads to ethical considerations.”

Retired Brigadier General Robert Mazzolin on AI and keeping humans “in the loop”

CIGI’s work on conflict and AI explored how AI and other emerging technologies are revolutionizing our lives even while they raise increasingly troubling international security and ethical concerns.

In the Modern Conflict and Artificial Intelligence essay series, former Canadian Armed Forces Brigadier General Robert Mazzolin explores the question of balancing AI and human decision making in military contexts and the ethical challenges that follow. Governments and scientists, he says, must treat AI governance and ethical considerations much like they did with nuclear and chemical weapons.

Public Safety Canada has shown significant interest in this project. CIGI will also partner with the Waterloo Artificial Intelligence Institute at the University of Waterloo and produce an essay series on the use of AI in the military.
