“Because of platforms’ global reach, other countries need to assert their interests in these debates. This can be done in part through stronger regulation that forces platforms to respect local differences.”

Blayne Haggart on the multilateral regulation of global digital platforms

The Global Platform Governance Network, which CIGI launched through a partnership with Luminate’s Reset initiative, brings together technology and democracy experts with civil servants, legislative staff and regulators to explore policy solutions to address privacy, competition, online safety, electoral integrity and countering online hate and extremism.

As part of this timely work, CIGI hosted two high-level conversations. Taiwan’s Digital Minister Audrey Tang explored how government transparency and deliberative democracy online helped Taiwan manage COVID-19 and how those approaches can counter misinformation more broadly on the internet. Minister of Canadian Heritage Steven Guilbeault and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada Arif Virani also joined a round table discussion with CIGI and McGill University’s Centre for Media, Technology and Democracy.
