“The United States…can no longer single-handedly dictate the pace of innovation in AI and in IT at large. It is in the interest of US industry that the government returns to a policy that promotes rather than disrupts the rule of law in international trade.”

Dieter Ernst in the EE Times

With the legal and diplomatic crisis surrounding Huawei and the race for 5G dominance, 2020 has been a year of battles over technology. At issue is one technology in particular: artificial intelligence (AI). Dieter Ernst has been carefully observing the competition, in particular between China and the United States, for dominance in the space.

In his March special report, Ernst considers the impact of US technology export restrictions as well China’s own weaknesses in advancing its AI industry. He concludes that US fears of China’s threats to its current AI dominance are “not grounded in reality.” An in-depth EE Times article on his report quoted Ernst as saying that the United States “can no longer single-handedly dictate the pace of innovation in AI.” In a related article, Jesse Hirsh sees TikTok — at its core an AI application — as offering a “glimpse into the larger global AI ‘arms race.’”
