“While [digital] platforms are pervasive in everyday life, the governance across the scale of their activities is ad hoc, incomplete and insufficient.”
The November 2019 meeting of the International Grand Committee on Disinformation and “Fake News” (IGC) in Dublin was an ideal moment to present concrete governance proposals directly to policy makers. A CIGI-led workshop prior to the meeting featured Jim Balsillie, Susan Etlinger, Robert Fay, Michel Girard, Taylor Owen and Heidi Tworek, among others.
The workshop also included calls for a Digital Stability Board — conceptually similar to the Financial Stability Board set up after the 2008 financial crisis — to tackle global platform governance issues through multilateral cooperation. Robert Fay had a related op-ed published in The Irish Times and did interviews with other media.
Building on the work of the IGC, a new network supported by Luminate’s Reset initiative and the Balsillie Foundation has already brought together civil servants from around the world to jointly pursue platform governance objectives.
