“Our embattled institutions must develop responses to digital technology if they are to be effective.”

President’s Message

Our new Strategic Plan is shaped by a guiding principle: the governance context we operate in is increasingly driven by digital technologies and frameworks, and the myriad social, economic and political issues they raise.

The plan outlines clear approaches for updating economic policies to manage data, addressing risks to security and democracy posed by new technologies, and adapting global institutions for a world shaped by digital transformation.

CIGI’s research and projects have already delivered important results, and our focus continues to sharpen as we bolster our expertise and further develop partnerships.

Necessarily, CIGI must continue to focus on institutions as they address new challenges and changing realities as well as significant gaps in digital governance. Our essay series on reforming the World Trade Organization (WTO) demonstrates CIGI’s approach.

Earlier this year I spoke at the Vatican on inclusion, integration and innovation with leading economists and others. The message was clear: our embattled institutions must develop responses to digital technology if they are to be effective.

As part of our focus on technology’s impact on society, CIGI launched a project on gender-based violence online with support from the International Development Research Centre. And, through a new partnership with the Canada School of Public Service, CIGI is providing expertise on the digital economy to thousands of civil servants and policy makers.

CIGI also continued to inform Canada-India relations with a meeting in Mumbai hosted by partner Gateway House, as India prepares to host the Group of Twenty (G20) economic forum in 2022, the seventy-fifth anniversary of Indian independence.

All of this is, of course, thanks to CIGI’s experts, partners and staff, as well as to the ongoing support we receive from the Government of Canada and many other institutions and organizations.
