China derives its strength as a digital economic powerhouse from its focus on big data, artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies, and digital trade. But its future growth in these areas may be stunted by US trade restrictions on chip exports and other decoupling measures. The Centre for International Governance Innovation hosted a virtual workshop on November 28, 2022, to explore these issues in the context of China’s digital governance practices. Experts from Canada, China, Europe, Singapore and the United States looked at developments in the three areas mentioned above to examine their current and future global impact.
