Brigadier-General Jay Janzen joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1989.

Bio

Brigadier-General Jay Janzen joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1989. He graduated from Royal Roads Military College and served as an armoured officer with the Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians) during the 1990s, and in 1999, he voluntarily transferred to the Public Affairs Branch. He has worked in numerous Public Affairs positions across the military and has completed two tours in Afghanistan as a senior public affairs officer. From 2009 to 2011, he served as director of public affairs for the Canadian Army.

He graduated from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Defence College and in 2012, he became the chief of media operations for Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, in Mons, Belgium. He was awarded the NATO Meritorious Service Medal for his role as a leading communications strategist and military spokesperson involved in communicating NATO’s multifaceted response to the Russia-Ukraine crisis. He was also the communications advisor to the deputy supreme allied commander Europe. In 2015, Jay was promoted to colonel and assumed the position of director of military strategic communications in Ottawa. He was recently promoted to B.Gen. director Public Affairs.
