Dear reader,
We are in the early stages of what is going to be an enduring reality, the contours of which remain uncertain. Like other organizations, CIGI has taken steps to protect the health of its staff and our community. In many ways, CIGI has always been a virtual, networked organization; our staff and fellows are located around the world. Now, with a work from home policy for our staff in Waterloo, Canada, the much-anticipated workplace of the future has been thrust upon us by the oldest of reasons: a germ.
The COVID-19 situation presents a number of issues that CIGI will explore in the coming months as part of our digital governance orientation: restrictions on the global trade of medical products and devices; the cyber security of public health systems; managing (yes, managing, not preventing) disinformation during a pandemic; and understanding how communications data can be used (or abused) for epidemiological purposes. We'll also be looking at the bigger picture of what a post-COVID world will look like — will we have more or less global cooperation, social cohesion or reason for faith in public institutions?
Sincerely,
Rohinton P. Medhora
