Privacy and freedom of thought are intertwined, forming the foundation for personal development and democratic participation. Privacy, a space free from external interference, nurtures mental autonomy. This fosters genuine freedom of thought, enabling independent and critical thinking, crucial for personal autonomy, intellectual growth and democracy.
In the digital realm, however, invisible threads of technology now influence our thoughts. Corporate entities and state actors subtly shape our beliefs online, challenging the protection offered by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms in Canada. The internet’s vast territories clash with privacy laws like the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, leading to profound questions about individual autonomy in a digitally dominated world.
Government intervention is crucial. Our research emphasizes the need for comprehensive reforms in privacy, artificial intelligence and online safety laws ensuring that our digital ecosystem aligns with our cherished values of freedom and privacy. As Canadians, we must responsibly exercise our freedom of thought and expression, critically evaluating digital content while respecting the rights and privacy of others.
Our goal is a future where technology serves to enhance, not undermine, our fundamental human rights.
