The Centre for International Governance Innovation and the Centre for Chinese Research at the University of British Columbia (UBC) are hosting a private, invitation-only round table discussion focused on the governance of artificial intelligence (AI) in China and its global implications. The event is co-sponsored by the Konwakai Chair in Japanese Research at the Institute of Asian Research at UBC.

The release of ChatGPT by OpenAI in November 2022 marked a landmark achievement in the development of AI. As a first mover in making regulations on AI, including generative AI, China has since fallen behind and is trying to close the gap with the United States in the global AI arms race, which is currently centred on the fast evolution of ChatGPT-like large language models and other foundation models. The event will bring together scholars and experts from universities, research institutes, the technology sector, business and government in Vancouver and across Canada and the world to discuss the development and governance of AI in China and the possible economic, political, security and social implications for Canada and the world.
