POSITION SUMMARY
CIGI is seeking an experienced writer and editor to manage content on the CIGIonline.org website with a particular focus on advancing opinion analysis on digital, technology economic and security issues aimed at a global policy-making audience.
The Managing Editor is a voracious consumer of news and research on digital governance who can anticipate information important to policy decision-makers and commission timely analysis in coordination with CIGI’s research teams. The position also manages the organization’s weekly newsletter. The position reports to the Director of Communications and Public Affairs.
The ideal candidate is a highly organized and meticulous person with good judgment and initiative who is capable of guiding internal and external contributors to produce insightful, engaging content that connects with the intended audience.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Editorial Guidance – Take primary responsibility for the editorial direction of CIGIonline.org, supported by a broad understanding of the activities and priorities of CIGI’s research programs. Regularly and actively contribute to an open sharing of ideas as to perpetually improve the digital publishing platform and its resonance with policy makers.
- Content Planning – Manage the editorial calendar for CIGIonline.org in collaboration with colleagues to situate content in broader research and communications strategies. This includes proactive engagement with the global network of CIGI Fellows and beyond to foster potential contributions.
- Content Creation – Commission, edit, write and post content for CIGIonline.org, including reported feature stories, long-form essays, opinion editorials, essay series, explainers, and question and answer interviews. Manage photographic, video, and audio content as applicable.
- Newsletter Management – Write and send out the CIGI newsletter, which contains the latest news and research delivered in a comprehensive, explanatory and accessible way.
- Evaluation – Compile quarterly audience reports for the website and newsletter to identify the opportunities for growth and improvement.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND QUALIFICAITONS REQUIRED
- Undergraduate degree or equivalent in journalism, English, communications or related field preferred.
- At least 3 years of experience with proven success in a writing and/or editing role (newsroom experience is preferred).
- Excellent writing, editing and verbal communication skills.
- Highly organized and detail-oriented with a proven ability to effectively manage multiple tasks.
- Ability to work both independently and as a strong contributor to a team.
- Aptitude for balancing competing priorities from a diverse set of internal and external partners.
- Working knowledge of a range of applications and software including social media platforms, content management systems, email systems and image editing.
- Analytical skills and working knowledge of web analytics and search engine optimization.
- Familiarity with technology, data, security and other issues relevant to the organization.
Note: This position is based at our CIGI Campus in Waterloo, Ontario, where employees have a hybrid work environment which requires them to be in the office a minimum of 2 days per week.
